Sunspots and Smiles

photo of novice monks

abandoned sons of yak herders surround me

finding refuge in the same robes

as this california monk

brotherhood: automatic for the seekers

examined under the bright exposure

of four mongolian novices, i feel safe

they will not eat me

for monks cannot eat after noon

“this what?”

freckles. too much sun for my white arms.

“no. this not possible.”

around the didentric roots of a Bodhi

we delight in each other’s

fragility of thought

Treasurecheeks opens up:

“your muscles are like flowers”

you have flowers in the Gobi?

“no. not like these.”

mendicants from opposite ends of an ochre garden

cannot ask for more

than our bowls to be filled

with the same sweetness of heart

sunspots and smiles, our elbows entwine

forever locking

Genghis and Gotama
